Who tells work what tax code I'm on?

My company keep putting me on a BR tax code. I have 2 incomes, and before, my tax free allowance was split between them, but my (newly taken over) company of 4 months (all TUPE'd across) got my code right on month 2 and wrong (BR) again months 3 and 4.

I spoke to HMRC 2 months ago who sorted my income into the previous 2 different codes, and emailed me this.

Is it up to me to tell my company this? Or do HMRC tell them?

Payroll is outsourced to an accountancy firm, and everyone in (newly created) management jobs at work are flailing around a bit! But presumably payroll pay me what they're told to, but who tells them that? Work? HMRC, or me?

Thanks.

All payroll software has to be linked to HMRC, the information comes through from there. It’s usually up to payroll how often they access the link though.

HMRC will also send a copy of the relevant tax code to each employer, but depending on when they sent it and when the payroll cut off for the employer it’s possible that it’s not immediately reflected. The HMRC app is pretty good, and will show the tax code applied to each employer on the PAYE tab.

I wonder if the accountancy firm DO the payroll, then? Or merely print out and send what they're told?

Unfortunately with the best will in the world, those in new management positions are flailing around, 'overseen' by nameless, faceless owners from the Near East who are new to ventures within the UK (they didn't even recognise that they had to issue payslips at first!).

I don’t think your employers can change your tax code without notification from HRMC

We get a message through our Company HMRC gateway account informing us for tax codes. If you are not happy with your tax code speak to HMRC to resolve it.

HMRC tell employer

They should tell payroll provider or ideally give the provider authority to act as agent and then they get a copy too
