Civil service interview questions

Does anyone know how to find a list of questions they might ask in interviews for civil service jobs according to the grades?

You need to work out first what types of question. The original job application and the invitation to interview should explain the types of questions to expect- eg strength, behaviours, technical etc. If it's behaviours it should also say which specific behaviours. You may then be able to find some examples by grade if you google eg SEO civil service 'delivering at pace' behaviour example interview questions.

It would help if you said what kind of job / profession you are applying for.

There are examples of interviews on you tube.

If you look up Jac Williams on YouTube, he has a link to a question bank of Civil Service interview questions grouped by Behaviour that he sells via Etsy. It is about £12 I think. I bought it before my last round of interviews and found it really useful for my interview preparation. I think it's helpful regardless of grade, as the questions really help you to understand the type of questions that the panel might use to explore the Behaviour. Your answer will then need to be appropriate to the grade you're applying for.

Would you say that civil service interviews were very stringent? To anyone that knows!

emsyj37 · 24/01/2025 12:27

Not sure what you mean by 'stringent' in this context, but I would say they follow a specific format and require proper preparation. Whereas you could 'wing' an interview in the outside world and a lot of it might be a conversation about your experience and exploring your fit for the organisation, motivations for wanting the job etc it is not like this in the Civil Service. CS interviews are about testing your evidence that you display the relevant behaviours.

@emsyj37 thank you, that's helpful. Not wanting to jump on OPs thread but I'm hoping to secure an interview and well, I'm very used to 'winging' it in interviews! Sometimes what comes out of my mouth surprises me tbh.

Yes I can talk about my experience and what I encounter day to day but I will definitely need to prepare in a different way for an interview that is scoring me differently

Very few people can wing a CS interview. They are more like an exam

There are lots of YouTube videos about CS interviews - Jac Williams is very good. The panel will be scoring your answers against the requirements of the relevant behaviour, so you do need to put the prep time in. It is nothing like an interview in the 'real world'.
