New job

I’ve just stared a new Job after 15 years in my previous job. Both my previous job and this one is part time, was doing 4 hours / 5 days a week this job 8 hours / 2 days a week. Old job did set hours this new one i could be doing early shift or late shift. I do prefer working 2 days a week rather than 5. My problem is there could be days when I would have to leave my senior dog for the whole working day if my shift clashes with DH”S. he also does shift work he does one week lates one week earlies. I don’t think he would cope for over 8 hours on his own as he isn’t used to it. My question is how do I approach my manager to request shifts so they dont clash with OH’S?

I think you should have discussed this before accepting the job.

Did you work out how to handle this before starting? As your manager I would be pretty annoyed if you introduced this problem once you had started.

This unfortunately. You can always ask but do so respectfully and be prepared for them to say no - it should have been discussed at interview.

Why on earth didn't you address this before accepting the job?

Hi. I stared the new job a few months ago and the dogs health has declined over that time.

@Wenway93 Sorry to hear about your dog. Unfortunate timing with the new job. For what it’s worth, I do think it’s worth a mention to your boss about your situation to see if there is anything they can do, but they may well say no.

If that’s the case, would a friend or family member be able to call in on the dog for you when you’re at work?

There are also people that you can pay to call in, if he doesn’t mind new people, if that’s an option might be worth looking at dog walking services on Facebook or there’s a website called borrowmydoggy where people could call in and walk your dog on set days?

Sometimes these things can’t be helped, hope you’re able to sort something.

Thank you for your positive reply.
Unfortunately I don’t know anyone who could help as they are at work themselves or live too far away. He can access the garden as we put in a dog flap that he knows how to use , my concern is just the length of time. He’s loosing his sight aswell as his hearing and now he seven got to the point where he will bark even if I go upstairs and he doesn’t realise and thinks I’ve gone out so just not sure he could manage with 8 hours

@Wenway93 I think then, once you’ve explored the options with your boss about your shifts, start looking at those websites for someone to come and check in on him twice a week when you’re out. The local Facebook pages should help and I think the borrowmydoggy website is free but I’m not sure on that. Good luck.
