Is 55 too old?

simple question: is being 55 years of age a factor which puts off prospective employers? I ask as I have had absolutely no follow ups from any job I have recently applied for. Even when I applied for a like for like job! I’m thinking it must be my age or I’m just terrible at doing application forms 😃

The last couple of jobs I applied for, I had to put every qualification with dates (plus a whole employment history) so it was impossible to hide my advancing age.

I was offered jobs aged 56 at GCHQ and aged 58 in the Civil Service (non-specialist roles) in the last three years.

I do think there has been a downturn in the job market in the past few years, though.
