Emergency contact

I know I’m over-thinking this, but what’s the purpose of a second emergency contact for a desk based job?

I’m starting a new job and trying to work out who to put apart from DH.

In case you have an accident or became ill at work and they can't get hold of first emergency contact.

Same as with a school. They ring the first one and then if they can't get through ring the second one. The second one doesn't have to be local they can be someone with DH contact details and continue to use other methods to get InTouch with your DH.

Just because it is desk based doesn't mean you can't have an unexpected medical emergency, choking, heart attack, aneurysm, stroke, fainting, broken limbs tripping over something etc, unlikely but these things do happen.

They also have a duty of care if you didn't turn up for work one day without calling in. You could have had an accident on the way in, be collapsed at home etc..... this way they can contact emergency contacts to find out you are OK.

Have you got adult relatives, they just need really to be able to pass on a message, it's not like a child where you would actively have to go to be with them, like to the school.

Thank you.

So MIL who lives in the same town as me is better than my nearest sibling who is 2 hours away? I’m estranged from my surviving parent.

MIL sounds like a great shout, siblings would also be fine if they can get a message to DH.

Just let her know you've included them as emergency contacts and if you know it what number will ring her / the area code as lots of people don't answer unknown numbers due to scams.
