Give me your best negotiating tips...

Down to the last 2 for a shortish FTC job and feeling positive.

It's advertised as a salary range of £5k, let's say £50-55k I really want the top end. My last salary was £52k but it was part time and I was topping up with consultancy which I would now stop. So I want £55k.

I would also like compressed hours (5 days over 4) and the organisation give it all that 🦀about flexible working but do they mean it?!? Anyway I'd really like that but not sure whether that's the moon on a stick under the circumstances.

Does anyone have any tips?

Can you get hold of a copy of Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg? Will help you in this situation, even tho she's awful

Read the blog called "askamanager" that has lots of great negotiating advice.

Which one of those two requests are most important for you, the salary or the four days? Know in your mind which one you're prepared to concede if you can only have one.

It also helps if you have a third request you can make (eg extra holidays or study time off), because then you can say ok, if you can meet the salary and four day week, then I'm happy to drop the extra holiday request.

Good luck!

Thanks all!

@FairgroundAttractionPerfect Ooh, really good point about the third request. I wonder if I might be best asking for a straight up 4 day week and "negotiating" to compressed hours or something like that? Another option is hybrid working, they're mostly remote and have to go in the once a fortnight but I'm happy to go once a week. Hmm!
