Advice re unpaid leave?

I’ve recently started a new job. My contract is to work 3 days a week, which can be any 3 days Monday-Sunday. As I’m part time, I’m only entitled to 12 days paid annual leave, however my employer has told me I’m only able to book unpaid time off for hospital appointments, which I have to show proof of. I’ve already booked my 12 days for next year as I have holidays booked. I’ve got concert tickets booked for a few events which would literally mean I couldn’t work for 2 hours out of the week - but I’ve been told I can’t request time off for this. Is there anything I can do about this? Just seems wrong that I cant even take unpaid leave when I don’t have set hours in the first place?

Could you talk to your manager about working different days that week?

Yes work your hours in the other days when the concert isn’t on?

How far in advance do they give your working days?

I was part time and flexible days so I used to arrange my days around appointments etc. Sometimes I would work Monday/Tuesday one week and Thursday / Friday the next so I could even go away.

I get my shifts 3 weeks in advance - unfortunately I dont get a say in what days I work which is essentially what the issue is! Just seems a bit wrong to me that I’m not able to plan anything more than 3 weeks in advance as a lot of events sell out long before then.

Whilst I am entirely in agreement with you, there is nothing you can do except get another job. Your employer has the right to tell you when you are working. They even have the right to tell you when your paid holidays will be taken. Nothing you can do about it.

Working 3 days a week you’re entitled to 17 days leave.
use the job as a:stepping stone, apply for a new one with set days asap.
