Asking for pay match to previous colleague in new job

I have been in my new job for a month now and this is bugging me. At my interview I was put on the spot and ask I was ok with the pay - it was a bit low but I said yes (was redundant so keen for another role) when I should have said I'll get back to them and tried to negotiate. I then got the role and the recruiter mentioned the guy I'm taking over from (same age / experience afaik from speaking with him) is paid more.

I'm thinking once my probation is over in 3mths I ask to be matched to his salary? Just want to know people's thoughts on this.

Do your company have an equal pay policy?

You could raise this once you successfully completed your probation period. Say that now you’ve had some time in the job, you’ve got a better understanding of the requirements of the role and based on your skills, you feel you are paid under market. Give them some examples of job ads that show higher salaries. And negotiate from there.

Thanks, very useful. I will do some research.

I don't because I hadn't wanted to ask the recruiter as it was winding me up - but I will ask as not knowing is winding me up too.

He was there a year and a half so not long service pay increase which could account for it.

I would definitely ask

There's no harm in asking for it to be considered but you need to be accepting and gracious if the answer is no. You accepted the job at the salary stated. That money is probably budgeted elsewhere now.
