Reference for new job

My current job originally started with a different company and they were very happy with my work. We provided a service for another organisation. Unfortunately my employer lost the contract to provide this service and I got transferred over to the other organisation.

This organisation have been very poor with how they've treated me and have now advised me my contract is only for a few more months as the team has too much staff. I can't last much longer there.

Luckily I have a job interview very soon, can I use the original employer as my 'previous reference' or does it need to be my current employer who I was moved across to?

Thanks

You can use whomever you like and arguably the old employer knows much more about your performance as an employee than the new one.

PS. Sorry meant to add 'good luck'!

You can use whoever. They may ask for a reference from your current employer though.

Thanks for your replies.

That is my concern unfortunately that they will want a reference from the second company and that this will have a negative impact.

Just to add new job does state they want a current or previous employer as a reference. I was employed by the first company for a year then the current one just over a year.
