Fixed Term Contracts

I work for a small employer, 9 staff. 3 of us started on FTC 2 years ago. 2 of us are managers and 1 is office worker. In the run up to the end date of the FTC we asked for clarification on the situation as work was ongoing and nothing had been said. Myself and the other manager had our contracts extended for 4 months. Initially we were ok with this. I have now discovered that the office worker (who did report to me) had their contract extended for another 2 years and been promoted to a manager, a lot of the JD they have been given is the same as mine. There was no indication this vacancy even existed. I had not been asked about the employees performance. I only found out by accident. I asked why I hadn't been at least informed and received a garbled email about being under pressure and thinking other people would tell me and that they were sorry I wasn't told of the decision to do this. My colleague and I feel disappointed, concerned and aggrieved. We are both single parents with financial responsibilities. Are we being managed out? Our roles are up for consideration of redundancy in 4 months time but we could both do the role given to the office worker but we were not given the opportunity to apply.

Why would the role be up for redundancy? Surely the contract just comes to an end? Most people I know who've been on a FTC start looking for their next role 4-6 months before the end of the contract.

Unfortunately, the employer was under no obligation to tell you about the role or to offer you the chance to apply. So whether you could do the role or not is irrelevant. But yes, I would be looking for other employment if I were you because it does not bode well for the future.
