My ds is applying for a job that needs a professional reference due to security clearance. They have to have known him for more then 3 years, be employed and in an professional job eg doctor, dentist, estate agent or previous employer etc. Its just to declare they know then and that they consider them to be honest, discreet etc. His previous job was a fast food chain, so managers have changed plus he wasn't there for 3 years and he wasn't hhis best self then but has not matured,. His head of year has signed one, and I have friends who are in professional roles. However, the criteria says they can't be a friend or family member and the form asks how they know said person. Obviously they are my friends not his, what can we put in the box to say how they know him? To be honest the criteria rules alot of people out and he is I my 20.

Use one of your friends who fits the professional criteria. It means he can’t use his mate Jimmy who’ll sign anything for a pint.

Ok so on the form it says how do you know this person so of I put acquaintance that should be fine shouldn't it? It's so bloody hard isn't. It's basically to say they know him and he is honest and discreet, consciousness etc and then their job details.

Retired is usually ok, I am a retired accountant and still do this sort of thing for people. I am still a member of my professional body, in their retired category.

Unfortunately it says they must be employed. What shall we put into he box about how they know the person?

Could your DS phone the recruitment team and ask about some of his options? If the company are used to recruiting young people they can probably offer advice - and may be a little more flexible.
