Notice period

Would appreciate some advice - I've been offered a new job which I plan to accept. My notice period is one month and if I submit it now I would start the new role at a tricky time over Christmas/New Year. The new firm have asked me to submit notice now but give two months, whereas I'd rather wait until the end of the year and hand in my notice then. Is there any reason I can't do that?

Your current employer might not accept 2 months notice and instead just arrange for your last day to be 1 month after you submit your resignation.

Have you received a contract for the new job?

I've never known a new employer to care when you resign from your old job - just that you are able to start on their start date.

Thank you - that's my thought, just wanted a sanity check. I'll double check the contract and see if there's anything in there that I've missed.

Just tell the new firm you’re happy to commit to a start date in 2 months and will give notice in a way that makes this possible.
