How to help friend who’s been out of work?

I have a friend of 30 odd years. She’s returned to the UK after living abroad for a long period. She had a difficult relationship breakdown and had found life very tough.

She was made redundant about 8 years ago and hasn’t worked since. She’s tried to get additional qualifications, but hasn’t ended up using them (teaching). I strongly suspect she’s depressed but am not medically qualified, so could be wrong. That said everything seems very difficult for her and she doesn’t always welcome advice.

Does anyone know of an organisation that might be able to give impartial advice to her? Sort of a career coach but not one you’d pay for. She’s been out of her original career for so long that a return might be difficult… perhaps they might think of something else? She’s in her 50s.

Thanks in advance.

8 years is a long time to be out of work when you are only in your 50s. Does she actively want to work? The job centre might be able to help with career advice.
