Mystery at work

This is my first post - please be gentle! In my office we have one large bathroom, which is shared by about 15 people. It’s a large room for a bathroom, and in it there is a toilet, sink, hand dryer and lots of empty space. 2-3 times a week for the last six months (!) I have found an entire toilet roll, on the floor, soaking wet having been pushed up to the wall (complete with footprint of the person who put it there). The sink is too small for a full toilet roll to be submerged, and it can’t have fallen down the toilet because the roll is too wide to actually reach the water. There are only a couple of spare toilet rolls on a stand in the corner - they cannot just ‘fall off’. I am totally and completely baffled as to why and how this happens so regularly. I’ve asked a few non-work friends who are just as confused as me 😂 and the person who I suspect does this is too shy for me to ask - I don’t want to make her feel awkward. Has anyone got any idea of what on earth is going on here?! It’s taking up far too much of my brain power!

OP posts:

Going to need a diagram or photo to comprehend this. Thanks for driving me crazy with it too 😂

JawsCushion · 09/11/2024 20:50

Is too shy the new too sensitive for reasons the poster gives for not using their words?

mnahmnah · 09/11/2024 20:53

So this person appears to be holding one side of the toilet roll under the tap and rotating it to soak through, then puts it on the floor against the wall and stands on it? 2-3 times a week. For 6 months?!

Not sure I have heard of anything this bizarre before! I’m afraid my response would be to write this in an all staff email asking them to stop. Not necessarily the right thing to do. But it’s what I would have to do!

mnahmnah · 09/11/2024 20:55

Also - has anyone else at work noticed this? Are people not talking about it?

ReadWithScepticism · 09/11/2024 20:55

Damn this is intriguing me. Am desperate for some sort of toilet roll Poirot to come onto the thread with the answer.

NotYourSaviour · 09/11/2024 20:56

Yep now I'm intrigued too. How do you mean, "pushed up to the wall"?

Oh...if you're talking about the giant rolls, maybe the person puts it on the floor as a footrest, a makeshift Squatty Potty (raising one's feet a little can help...things)?

Not sure how that would render it soaking wet though, unless there is water on the floor...

NotYourSaviour · 09/11/2024 20:58

Actually this has just given me a flashback to a notice in the toilets at the Aon offices, circa 2001 - "Please do not place bags of faeces in the sanitary bins."

🤔

haje · 09/11/2024 20:59

What makes you suspect this one person?

Have you tried the general please do not do x emails?

Mipil · 09/11/2024 21:00

Are they using the loo roll to mop up a puddle on the floor using their foot? What the puddle might be, how it got there, and whether the person who made the puddle is the same person who mopped it up, would be another mystery 😂 TBF if there was a mystery puddle on the floor and no cleaning equipment, I would probably do that.

twomanyfrogsinabox · 09/11/2024 21:00

Put a note up saying. 'Please don't waste the toilet rolls by soaking them and dumping them on the floor! If there is a problem please contact xyz'.

MaggieBsBoat · 09/11/2024 21:16

Why do you suspect the shy person? Do they generally arouse suspicion??

Bailar · 09/11/2024 21:22

Try taking the toilet roll away and have your own secret supply of tissues.

BIWI · 09/11/2024 21:26

If it's your first post, why do you need to ask us to 'be gentle'? Hmm

ThisWarmPanda · 09/11/2024 21:27

What is the roll wet with and how wet is it? Have you found it in different degrees of wetness? Can you get a footprint off it also? What kind of work are you all doing and is this reflected in footwear, ie you mention footprints on the roll, so presumably someone wearing smooth soled stilettos might not be the culprit. Are there any marks on the floor to indicate its direction of travel which might then point to a cause? How clean or dirty is the rest of the floor generally? Is the bathroom shared with both sexes?

Because people read for a long time before they start posting. So they know how things can go….

Which isn’t a positive thing about MNters imo.

MitochondriaUnited · 09/11/2024 21:28

If there is a foot print, does it tell you if it’s a man/woman/big or small feet/type if shoes?

BIWI · 09/11/2024 21:29

Have you been on MN for very long @MitochondriaUnited? It's a classic.

Mrsgreen100 · 09/11/2024 21:34

Some one missed the pan and mops up with a roll ?maybe

Apollo365 · 09/11/2024 21:49

This is weird, I am intrigued! I like PPs suggestion of mass email. I don’t like weird behaviour

Winter2020 · 09/11/2024 22:03

I think they have been dropped/knocked in the loo. Even though the whole role would not fit in the water the part that has got soaked then spreads through the rest as it sits on the floor.

Is a spare roll sometimes popped on the back of the loo. At my work there is a dispenser but sometimes a loose roll is placed on the back of the loo and used as well. Could then get knocked in.

2 or 3 times every week for 6 months tho??

Wallawallakoala · 09/11/2024 22:42

Bonkers! Need to know!

ludocris · 09/11/2024 23:24

This needs to be in chat for more traffic. I'm
sure someone will come up with a workable theory.

That just sounds like deliberate and mindless vandalism then?

Probably full colostomy bags.
