What to do ?

I have a secure government job where I am acting up to a senior role but there is no certainty around the future of that role.It is stressful and pressurised but also rewarding and challenging in a good way. I dont hate it ! I also have a fallback role which to be honest is similarly insecure in the endless round of restructures and not very interesting . I have however been with my employer for 30 years and would be entitled to a substantial redundancy payment should the worst happen . I have been offered a long but fixed term contract in a really dynamic role that I am excited about . I still have decades of working life in front of me and the new skills I could gain here would be beneficial . Has anyone had a similar dilemma and what did you decide ?

Is the new role also government? If so could you do it as a secondment? If not I’d be tempted to anyway, particularly if it’s something you’re really interested in. What are the chances of redundancy? If yours is a secure role it sounds unlikely that they’d make you redundant.

I would be very very wary of giving up that gold plated govt pension after 30 years in. We’re probably around the same age and I’m starting to think more about enjoying my retirement than my working life now.
