Apply for a higher graded post in my old dept

I took a sideways move to gain more experience as I had outgrown my role in my current area. 6 months in I am doing well, have had good feedback and it has also been recognised that I am largely above my grade. A higher graded position has been advertised in my old dept which is also permanent, would it be bad form to apply for it? I am on a fixed term contract, with a likelihood of renewal but no guarantee. My old dept the work culture was at times hard, although this role is for a specific workstream

Not bad form at all and daft to let the chance pass you by!

You could well end up back in your old
job at the lower grade when your fixed
term post ends. I've personal experience of "almost certain" contract extensions not coming to fruition because of money, other restructuring, change in strategy etc
