Had a job interview a week ago today for a role I'm really keen on. They responded at lightening speed to my application saying how much they wanted to meet me. Found the recruiter (who would be my boss) a little hard to read...however, after the meeting he sent an email sounding very positive and asking me to send some additional samples of previous work I've done to further illustrate my suitability. (This is normal for my industry and I'm confident they weren't totally shit 😆)

I was feeling quite upbeat about things but since then I've heard... zilch. Not even an acknowledgment of the work sent through.

This doesn't look good, does it? I know it's only been a week, but he knows I'm interviewing for other roles - if he was desperate to hang onto me as a candidate surely I would have heard something by now?!

Half term?

PrincessofWells · 29/10/2024 18:13

You're the back up candidate.

EBearhug · 29/10/2024 18:15

Half term, key people on leave.

needleeye · 29/10/2024 18:50

I did think of half term, but surely if they really wanted me they would send a holding email to let me know nothing would happen this week?

@PrincessofWells - thanks. I don't think I've got it tbh but what makes you think that specifically?

Doubt it. If anyone has thought of it, they've probably assumed someone else will be delighted with it.

I've had a fair few interviews in the last year. I don't think any of them responded as quickly as they said they would. And in two cases, I got the job.

needleeye · 29/10/2024 19:08

@EBearhug - well you've given me some hope, thank you! 😘 I'm not sure I understand quite what you mean by '...they've probably assumed someone else would be delighted with it' though? As in, delighted not to be contacted over half term?!

I’d say relax it’s not been long.

BeanBeliever · 29/10/2024 19:13

Half term/they might be comparing you to an internal candidate

I have had really negative experiences with people asking for interviews and using the case study as free consultancy: hope you are not in this situation re your work samples

You're the back up candidate.

Yes this has been my experience when they’ve taken ages to contact me. They’ve offered the job to their preferred person, who is considering it, they’ve said no to anyone they don’t want, they’re leaving you hanging so they can offer it to you if the top candidate says no.

Obviously I hope it’s just half term and they’ll offer it to you ASAP! Just that’s the scenario I’ve seen a couple of times recently.

EBearhug · 29/10/2024 19:21

That should have said dealing with it, not delighted with it! Sorry for the confusion.

needleeye · 29/10/2024 21:19

@EBearhug 😂 - no problem and thanks.

@BeanBeliever - sorry this happened to you. It wouldn’t be the case for this thankfully but it’s appalling how much this kind of thing goes on.

It’s a very small company so I know it wouldn’t be an internal candidate in the running or an HR department issue.

Thoughts on dropping them a line tomorrow? Don’t want to be desperate/annoying - but equally, I thought I might have had some kind of update by now, even if it’s just ‘we’re still interviewing others and will get back to you’.

@needleeye : wait til Tues next week (after half term)

Being too keen won’t help you negotiate salary if you get it, if you haven’t got it then it won’t matter either way

way easier said than done though: sorry . I’d be itching to message them too

needleeye · 29/10/2024 21:44

@BeanBeliever - thank you. You are probably right that it’s better to hold my nerve. It’s so frustrating, I just want to know where I stand!
