Manager going through my email sent folder

I've taken a contract with a large regional organisation but am in a small team. My work is very niche but I've been plonked somewhere where no one really understands what it is i do specifically. That's not a problem as i can just crack on with most of it due to experience. There are a few things here and there though i do need to ask, but mostly admin related to how the organisation functions.

My manager is an inexperienced younger one and is behaving quite bizarrely with me. Not replying to key queries that are urgent but getting in touch about little irrelevant things all the time. They micromanage but in all the worst miniscule ways but without being in any way useful. With a side order of taking credit for my work. And little lies about things here and there. Its getting in the way of my work and I've got a lot of deliverables to get in.

I found out that they have been going through my email sent box which they access to, and i received an email about something related to that which i found really quite bizarre. Bizarre because i had copied them in anyway. This is just one in a series of issues in a short time of working there. I'm so cross about this invasion of trust its keeping me awake.

It feels emblematic of a culture there which is a perfectionist head girl culture but which doesn't actually recognise that I've been brought in to deliver something really specific which no one else can do there.

I have tried to raise things but to no avail. What to do? Its really starting to wear me out!

If this were about one person, then maybe manage your manager. However, you’re saying it’s company wide. Is it really worth the headache? Can you get a job on decent money using your skills elsewhere?

Sounds like a move is for the best. Either to a different internal role/manager avoiding her, or a new job elsewhere.

I don't see an issue with work emails being read. It's like historically reading files of contact notes. Getting up to speed on projects and for training purposes.

As you say, she was copied in anyway.

I guess it felt like she was snooping. I have created regular reports to share so this shouldn't be an issue and i haven't done anything that hasn't already been agreed, it just feels sneaky and weird to approach things by going through my sent box when I'm transparent about my work anyway.

If you’re on contract can you set up an external email that she doesn’t have access to? Then you can control what she reads, obviously continuing to copy her in on anything she needs to see.

I would look for another job. Work culture is very hard to change. If it's not the way you like to work it'll just get more frustrating. I couldn't cope with that.

I couldn't sleep last night as was so cross about being treated like a child but also being in a strange and unsupportive environment.
