How do I stop feeling like this about work?

I work part time 4 mornings per week, the rest of the team work full time except one other colleague who works part time but does full days.
I constantly feel that i have to prove that me finishing earlier doesn't affect the rest of the team and because of this I feel I am putting more stress on myself.
I feel I get more and more jobs put on to me and because I work part time I can't complete them all and then I feel bad for not completing them.
I also feel that because I don't work overtime they hold that against me, we are always short staffed so I would be working overtime constantly and I don't want that.

How it would affect the rest of the team? Surely the work is divided out according to % of week you work. So you should not be allocated work which can't be completed in your hours so others have to pick up. If you are then you need to address this with your manager. Be careful they are not trying to get full time work from you for part time pay!

I always found if anyone commented on part time I always came back with "Yes but I only get 50% of your salary"

Yes, you might be surprised at how many seemingly intelligent people think that part time workers receive a full time salary.

Do you feel this because of something that is said or done to you? Or because of an internal narrative within yourself?

I think its really hard to work just a morning, I uses to work 2.5 days and always left on my half day leaving jobs unfinished as there was just not enough time. I now do 3 full days and dont have that feeling.

Do you have any flexibility to change to a longer day even if it was just one full and 2 mornings to see how this affects how you feel. It also means less days in the office.

absolutely not saying that your colleagues are right. I don't have any advice there.

Could you work 2 full days on days that the other part time worker doesn't? Currently there is 2 more staff in the mornings on the days they work and 2 less in the afternoons when they don't, it might be less stressful for you to feel like you have a constant workload and only mornings to do it.

@FoxtrotOscarKindaDay I have thought about doing full days which is what I use to do. I went to mornings because of a health condition, that was 4 years ago. Im not sure if I could cope with working full days, it would be an 11 hour day for me with travel to and from work.

@magneticpeasant its because of things colleagues have said to me in the past.

I think a lot of this is about poor management. Have you raised it with your manager?

magneticpeasant · 05/10/2024 21:46

And how did your manager deal with previous inappropriate comments?

@magneticpeasant she didn't deal with it, have a new manager now.
