Going back to work

I've been off work for several years due to mental health problems. I'm actually feeling a bit better and am thinking about going back next year.

It seems impossible though. Who is going to give me an interview after such a long break? I'm worried about losing my benefits as I know I won't get them back if it doesn't work out - what if I can't cope?

How do I even start? I was looking today and only saw one vaguely suitable job. I don't think any of my decent clothes even fit for interviews.

Has anyone gone back after a long break?

Could you volunteer to start with. Get used to a routine and gain some skills. You could do this while you look for work. Glad you are feeling better

I was in a similar situation. I've been working a few months now albeit part time I felt this was a good place to start. I think employers are more sympathetic to mental health issues, only if you wanted to bring it up.

I had to buy clothes for interview as I'd put on weight- Sainsbury's/Tesco good.

If you can manage to live on less money incase less than you currently receive it could give you extra benefits- social interaction, routine. If it doesn't suit you try something else. Good luck!

There used to be government schemes to help people ease back in where you didn't immediately lose access to all benefits and employers were more sympathetic. A friend used one very successfully 25 years or so ago. It's worth asking about them. Good luck OP
