User researcher looking for advice from women in tech

Hi! I’ve looked through the women in tech thread previously and have found it a really useful source of information so I’m hoping mumsnetters will be able to help me now as I try to figure out what to do next.

I currently work as a user researcher for a consultancy. When I moved into tech 2 years ago there was lots of talk about how great an industry it was with lots of scope for career progression and now I’m hearing a lot about mass layoffs and redundancies. I have noticed that the job opportunities for user researchers are few and far between and they are mostly at consultancies. This worries me because I have recently had DC2 (I moved into tech from a social sciences background so am not a fresh graduate) and don’t want to be worrying about where I could be based next and what their needs will be for office working when they could be anywhere in the country.

I am currently at a crossroads and don’t know whether to persevere with user research or look to expand my skillset or get out of tech altogether. If anyone has any thoughts I’d be really keen to hear and apologies if I don’t reply very quickly as I’ve scrabbled to write this between nap times.
