Team away day

During the summer I ended up taking 6 weeks off sick. This months pay is going to be SSP and 70 hours deducted from my pay so won’t have much this month and it’s going to be a struggle. We have a team away day this week and we’ve got to contribute £12 & more for lunch (or we can bring our own) as well as travel and parking costs. Im still not myself and really don’t want to go and I don’t really have the spare money this month to spend on an away day. i am torn between calling in sick that day or do I up front speak to my manager to say I can’t afford it so won’t be attending and will get on with other work on the day?

Speak to your manager.

Zanatdy · 23/09/2024 06:37

I’d speak to your manager. Given your lack of pay it’s not unreasonable at all that you can’t afford to go

Definitely speak to your manager.

Taking a day off sick is probably the worst thing you can do. You need to be honest. They shouldn't really expect you to fund this.

Rafting2022 · 23/09/2024 06:39

How much will it cost without the lunch? Could you share a lift with someone to split the travel and parking costs?

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 23/09/2024 07:10

Speak to your manager and be honest.

They shouldn't be putting these extra costs in to you for a work event.

EternallyDelighted · 23/09/2024 07:15

Yes, speak to your manager, they are being unreasonable if these charges exceed what you would spend on a normal day's travel / lunch at work.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 23/09/2024 08:53

If it's a work event, then they should be putting their hand in their pocket to pay for it.

It's scandalous that you're expected to pay for it.

Thank you all for your responses. I’ve sent my manager an email. I’ve said I’m happy to still work that day instead.
