Temporary management responsibilities

I work in a team of 6 people. Our manager has been off sick for 1 month and is likely to be off for at least 2 more months, if not longer. I am seen as the most senior/experienced team member so I have been asked to take on the management role for as long as is required. Should I ask for a payrise or a temporary increase in my pay to cover the additional responsibilities? If so, how would you advise that I go about doing this without sounding like I am trying to profiteer from my mangers illness? For reference, I work for a large national private sector company that is renowned for being stingy with pay rises.

I think they would have offered if it was in the budget. You could ask for some additional responsibility money but I wouldn't. I would just treat it as a great trial run to see I I like the promotion and opportunity to learn new skills

@Doggymummar thanks for your reply. Part of me feels exactly like this, get the experience which will set me up for a promotion or next role. The other part of me feels that "if you don't ask you don't get". The promotion opportunities within the same company seem to be limited, and I have been working there for nearly 8 years. Maybe it's a good idea to get the extra experience and then look elsewhere for the next step up. Definitely lots to think about over the next few months!

this kinda happened to me. Boss was out sick and then laid them off and I became head of
group. I asked for a pay rise but the leadership person said that it’s not unusual for people to take on extra responsibilities! They said they’d support me but now I’m on a PIP due to a new inexperienced boss who doesn’t know my subject matter area!

Yes I would, and have approved it for people in the past - in fact normally we proactively offer something when asking someone to step up and take more responsibility temporarily.

Although it depends on the nature of the extra responsibility- just answering the team’s questions vs overall responsibility for the team’s work, identifying raising and resolving issues, doing appraisals, assessing any performance issues, reporting on team work etc?
