Hi,

Looking to move jobs after being in the sales industry for 13 years - my cv is totally out of date and having a nightmare putting one together - has anyone paid for professional cv writing services? If so, was it worth it?
Thanks x

Have you tried an AI? Give it the main points, what you want to convey, and ensure it knows you're British looking for work in the UK (if true). You can keep asking it to rework it.

Yes I have paid for a cv writing service and no, they did a rubbish job and it was not worth it.

the best book to help rewrite mine was ‘ knockout cv’ by John lees. It covered everything really well.

Thanks for the replies will take a look at both recommendations x
Do you have a preferred template - tried a few on word but can't seem to get them to format correctly?
Thanks 😊

I know what you mean about Word templates 😂 They're great if your document happens to be exactly what the designer was thinking of! If you don't find one that suits you, my recommendation is to use the built-in elements of any document, so Heading1, Heading2, etc, as you see fit. If you use them properly it's easy to reformat the elements how you want, and the Outline will work correctly for you.

... I've never tried this, but ChatGPT should be able to work with Word documents. Is this article any help on that? https://updf.com/chatgpt/chatgpt-word-document/

Or maybe not yet! I just asked it:

If you use an AI CV writing company don't use AltResume as it's a scam. I advise you to check out revirws on Trustpilot before using sny cv writing services.

Hey, there are some good templates on Zety, novoresume and resume.io. If you are willing to use AI you can try Deepseek or ChatGPT.

As for CV writing services, you must read online reviews before consulting. CV Writings, TopCV, CVPrime, CityCV, PurpleCV are some of the top names in the UK. These services can turn out super useful if you are struggling with compiling your experience. Just stay in touch with your CV writer to make sure all your info is correct.

look at the (american) website called askamanager.com who has lots of good advice on 'resumes'. In particular, make sure you specify your achievements, not just a list of what you were meant to do.

Also, be aware that style of CV varies substantially between different industries. there is no point in using either a paid or generic CV formatting service if it does not fit the norms of your industry. So do search for advice within your industry.

I have used a very good person recommended by a friend that has set up specific CV Writing Service as a lot of people needed their CVs completely rewritten. They have an extensive recruitement background and have reviewed 1000s of CVs so know exactly what is required to get the interview. I was not expecting my previous CV to be so off the mark but after a complete rewrite I did get called for interviews. I ended up securing the job and the recruiter told me afterward that the client had already decided I was the right person based on my CV. Not saying this would happen in everycase and obviously interview prep is also important. I understand that AI is now playing a part in the CV but ends not being reflective of what the person can actually do and recruiters end up recieving almost identical CVs from multiple candidates.
