My boss didn't get a job and she's clearly very disappointed and flat. She keeps her cards close and doesn't give much away but it was obvious she would have applied for the role so I just said, if you were in the running I'm sorry you didn't get it. She just responded that she was very disappointed. Any nice discreet ideas on how to support or show some empathy? I feel a personal touch would be nice but not sure. If she was successful then she would have been at the 'top'.
