Having worked for my employer for a number of years, I left as a 'whistle blower'. I'm based in the UK (England).
Now trying to find employment, I'm being given bad references. Talk of referral to my regulating body, ongoing investigation into my conduct (I have not been made aware of this from my previous employer).
My ex colleagues have all been told they are not to speak to me (luckily one has).
I've had one job offer retracted due to their reference, and as soon as I tell prospective employers the issues, they don't want to know.
I have a mortgage and children, I cannot afford not to work. I'm feeling so helpless, like there's no point being here anymore and I've let my family down, by doing what I thought was the right thing.
I have contacted my union and I'm awaiting a call back. I'm (was) an RGN.

Maybe try something like PALs? There are a lot of patients who would benefit from having a qualified nurse liaison. Alternatively can you take a specialist masters degree so you can get back to work in a new area of nursing? That way your primary reference for the next job can be your university tutor.
