Maternity pay

I am due to leave work to go on Maternity soon. My general manager told me the more hours I work beforehand, the better my maternity pay will be, although I'm aware maternity pay can be quite low. He is obviously aware of this but he is giving me shorter shifts by three or so hours each time and giving these hours to another team member who, from what they have said themselves, don't need the hours as much as me. My midwife said they try to pay the least money out to you. Is this what is happening? I don't understand why he is taking my hours when I have voiced to him that I would prefer to work lunches and gain a few more hours. Am I being messed around here and has this happened to you? Do I have any rights to argue this? I can't help but feel I'm being messed around

What does your contract say about an enhanced maternity package? Otherwise it’s stat mat pay and that’s based on what you earn between the qualifying period (weeks 17-25 I think, but check). I’ve never heard of employers deliberately trying to reduce maternity pay.

Yeah this, if you don’t get enhanced pay then for SMP it’s only the first 6 weeks it matters for as that is 90% of your pay, calculated based on your pay during the qualifying weeks, but your employer has absolutely no reason to reduce that as the government pays it not them, after 6 weeks it just goes to the standard SMP amount
