Is this micro management?

My boss says he's happy with my work. He also did skip level with my team and he said they are all happy. However, I find that he's telling me to delegate more and more to my team. His preference and management style is to delegate everything. I'm puzzled as I do not see other team is lead like that (lead by another director).

On one side he's moving me in direction of progression (pushing leadership team for my masters) and asking me to work more upstream. Whereas on the other side he's asking me to delegate most of the ongoing project work.

I'm puzzled. Any thoughts??

I don't really understand why you're puzzled. He is telling you to step up. What isn't clear?

Maybe he wants you to become more strategic and delegate the operational work?

The ability to effectively delegate is an essential management skill. So I reckon he is training you up on that, with a view to promoting you at some point.

Telling you to delegate is not micromanagement. It's your manager tell you that you need to give the more junior work to your team to not only free you up for strategic/higher level work but also support your team's development.

Not doing the day to day project work is normal for management.

Your boss is encouraging you to be more strategic and less involved in the detail.

This isn't micromanaging, but him setting overall direction for you. Sitting down with you and working out who should do each individual task, would be.
