Hr expert? Adding new items to PIP midway through first assessment

Can your line manager do this? I asked for my PIP to be more SMART and to know what success looks like but they’ve gone in and added new initiatives mid way through? These are things I’ve been actively responding to and seems like moving the goal posts! Why are these new things in my PIP?

I am not HR, but a manager who have done many PIPs. I dont see why you can’t add items, if more items where you need to improve come to light. To be brutally honest, when I get as far as putting people on a PIP it’s because I actively want them out of the job.

@Holllyaxe normally I’d agree but I have had people in my group who can’t do the job and passed the PIP! We have a new manager 3 months in door. Totally inexperienced and put 2/4 staff in
leasersHip positions on PIPs. All have had successful end of years with no warnings. Redundancies everywhere and this really is being managed out so no redundancy pay! I have basically had stuff manager implemented last week in PIo added! I don’t agree!

I've never put anyone on a PIP who didn't need to be on it, and if new issues come up I've added in new objectives. Just because no one has been on a PIP before doesn't mean they were performing satisfactorily: I've started as with a new company and it was explained at the offer stage I would need to deal with performance previously not managed.

Well before you say they’ve added targets/started a PIP, do you agree that you’re not meeting what would be conventionally expected targets/levels/behaviours?

Have the targets changed for everyone?
