please help me calculate my bank holiday hours!

I work 17.5 hours a week - monday to thursday. My colleague is saying I need to work an extra 3.5 hours as there is a bank holiday and I can only take 3.5 hours of it. but surely I'm only getting paid for half bank holidays anyway? I don't get it!

Why are you listening to your colleague? Are they your manager?

You work 0.5 FTE, you are entitled to 0.5 Bank Holidays, you would have worked 0.5 of Monday if it wasn’t a Bank Holiday, so you use 0.5 bank holiday entitlement and the other 0.5 you’re not scheduled to work anyway.

It will depend on your company, and possibly your contract, but companies I've worked at generally pro-rated your bank holiday allowance over the year and then combined it with your annual leave to reflect the total amount of "time off" you could take in a year.

I don't think that's right as OP works her 0.5FTE over 4 days and there are disproportionately more bank holidays on Mondays.

It depends on your T&Cs and how your payroll operates.

  1. If Bank Holidays are normal working days for you, you would work your usual hours.
  2. If Bank Holidays are not normal working days for you, i.e. you get the day off, and your payroll is set up to only pay you 3.5 hours for each Bank Holiday, you don't need to do anything different.
  3. If Bank Holidays are not normal working days for you AND - as is often the case - payroll is set up to pay you for the whole day, you will have to take 7 hours from your holiday entitlement to cover it, or work the extra 3.5 hours to 'pay it back' if that's the agreement / you don't have enough leave to cover it.

She’d still be entitled to 0.5 FTE of bank holidays, so if a day is usually 7hrs, 3.5hrs. Her entitlement wouldn’t change based on which days she did the 0.5 over.

I had assumed OP does does the hours evenly across the four days. If they do 7hrs on Monday, and then 3ish the other days, the 0.5 FTE Bank Holiday requirement wouldn’t cover all of Monday’s hours.

If your company has any sense then they will be giving you all your annual leave and bank holiday as hours rather than days.

If you normally work 4.5 hours on a Monday then you take 4.5 hours leave. Job done.

If you normally work 7 hours on a Monday then you take 7 hours leave and request to switch your working hours around so you don't need to use so much leave every time there's a bank holiday. Or you ask to make your hours up on a different day.

thank you - its a bit of a strange set up as I usually spread the hours out and work mon - thursday every week of the year except in august when i condense my hours to do a full day on a monday (9-5pm) and a full day on tuesday (9-5pm) then half a day on wed (9-12.30) so it only affects the august bank holiday i think? I really hope that makes sense??

Then I think you do need take 7 hours from holiday as you are not working 7 hours of the 17.5 contract. You only get given 3.5 hours to cover it (over a year)
But you also get an extra 3.5 hours for say Good Friday to use anytime you want.

Agreed.

I only e work one day a week so get 1/5th of the bank holidays.
If my e were irking day was a bank holiday I would use up 0.2 a day from bank holiday allowance and 0.8 from normal holiday. )thought it's just one block on the system)

So i normally just switch days around on those weeks. Unless I am planning "a whole week off"
