How to sell a pen in an interview?

I have an interview in two days and I googled the kind of questions they ask. They ask you to sell a pen or a piece of jewellery every time. I have no idea how to go about this, does anyone have any advice?😓

But do I start as if she's just walked into a pen shop ie 'hi how are you today'?

Do what ever you'd do from the beginning of the conversation yes

Dont do this! How not to sell a pen!

😂

It's very outdated as a technique, right up there with 100 uses for a paperclip and who would you throw out of the sinking balloon, but I'd be inclined to turn it round and focus on the customer with a series of questions about the occasion, who they're buying for, and then emphasise how the pen's features fit their needs.

I would tell them that they can't have my pen because it is a super pen and you won't part with it because you have never had a pen as good as this one. put it in your pocket and walk out of the interview. they will phone you up and ask for their pen back. ask them how much they will pay you to return the pen (you won't get the job but it will be fun and might teach them not to use stupid interview techniques)

Boopbeepbeepboop · 20/08/2024 19:49

Leave, with the pen. When they phone you up later and ask why you left and can you bring the pen back, give them a price 🤣
Just joking, I've no idea people still asked such stupid questions. Genuinely think I might leave though as I would feel that is not the place for me with such ridiculous interview techniques.

😁...I think I have seen it as a skit somewhere

This sounds awful! I couldn’t do this but I also couldn’t work in sales I’d be rubbish at it!

Don’t know if you’ve seen the Wolf of Wallstreet film with Leo DiCaprio but there’s a scene in this when he’s trying to recruit sales people and asks them to sell him his pen, reminds me of that!

Very old fashioned and I would be concerned what other archaic opinions etc the company had but anyway.
What you are doing is solving a problem
The problem is that they need to write/draw
Find out exactly what they need to do and how important it is - open questions, they should be talking more than you at this point.
Explain how your solution will allow them to do that - Features/benefits
Ask if they have any questions/what other information they need to make a decision
Ask them to buy the pen (close)

I wouldn't go to a lame interview like that unless I was desperate for the job.

I agree.
I would just ask " Do you want to buy this pen?" If they say no or want to know the benefits, I would suggest to them that they are probably better off with a crayon.

I wouldn't get the job.

And I wouldn't care.

I was once interviewed for warren James jewellers and I was asked this.

I got the job. They described the gold earrings to me, and I added some adjectives and asked if they were for her, and said they'd suit her as she clearly liked gold earrings.

Yes think I saw one about a laptop!

Ellythe · 20/08/2024 20:48

Can you sign this piece of paper for me? No? You need a pen? Here have mine it's £1000

Noseyoldcow · 20/08/2024 21:11

I really was asked this in an interview. The bloke interviewing had a manky cheap biro, and asked me to sell it to him. I picked it up, snapped it in half, and handed it back saying "you need a new pen, mate. I might have one in my bag I can sell you". I got the job.

whatawickedgame · 21/08/2024 07:20

@PeskyPotato that's actually where it's for. Could I PM you?
