Fireside interview! Has anyone had one?

I had a first stage interview which only consisted of situation/competency based questions. I've now progressed to the second stage which is a "fireside interview" with a senior member of staff.

Has anyone had one of these? Did it consist of situation based questions too?

TIA x

Its just a chat.

What fresh hell is this?

A "fireside chat" is basically an informal interview. So not competency based, basically do they like you. Character rather than experience or skills.

But they're not allowed to say it's a "does the big boss like you" interview, so they call it something meaningless instead. Good luck...

I think it would be an assessment of how well you fit in the organisation and/or team. You might get lots of questions about management and leadership style, ways of communicating, that kind of thing.

It’s an informal chat for you to decide if you really want to work for a company that uses this kind of wanky BS language.

I had one. Very chit-chatty. Utterly irrelevant to the actual job. I was asked about the small town I originally came from, why I would recommend the manager visiting it. I wasn't a job in tourism. I was asked on my views on grammar- not totally irrelevant for the job not that important in the sense of I can read and write enough to pass a degree.

I must have come across alright as I was offered the job and hour later. Just be ready to discuss anything and everything.

Thanks all. I've just had the interview and it went bad. It wasn't informal (in my opinion). The person interviewing me was nice and told me about themselves and their journey, and was asked what I currently do and was asked about 4-5 formal questions, with most of the questions being questions I hadn't prepared. I'm very disappointed in myself and I definitely didn't get the job!

I had one of these for private industry. What. A. Wank. It was a subsequent interview where they obviously targeted the ‘chat’ at delving into your weakness/strengths but under the premise of friendly conversation. Fucking tiresome. I’m not bitter, as I did secure the role, but just call it what it is ffs and drop the pretence.

CloudPop · 31/07/2024 14:31

What sort of things did they ask ? Sorry to hear it wasn't good

HoppingPavlova · 31/07/2024 14:33

@Ilovemyshed Its just a chat
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Nope, never ‘just a chat’, there’s always something behind whatever they want to ‘chat’ about.

I can't remember all the questions but I was asked...

"Describe a time when I've had to use administration and technology to help your exec?" - I wasn't expecting this question so it threw me off!

"Describe a time when you had to prioritise?" - I had prepared for this

"How do you go about building relationships?" (this wasn't the exact question but was the gist)

There were other questions but I can't remember them. I answered all the questions but most of them badly!

Sorry to hear it went badly OP. That was misleading, calling it a 'fireside',as it was actual formal questions. I would have been expecting something more casual.

They probably didn't even know what they meant by fireside, isn't it used in the US? Unless it's a US company.

coxesorangepippin · 31/07/2024 19:59

It's a supposedly informal natter

But you and me both know it's anything but!

coxesorangepippin · 31/07/2024 20:00

I'm sure you've done ok, op
