WIBU to go off sick?

I recently handed my notice in at work due to a combination of factors. One of the main reasons was that my manager makes me feel uncomfortable. She's unapproachable, highly strung, and after a recent issue I had she had started to pick regular faults and make subtle comments to make me feel marginalised.

The last 2 weeks since I've handed in my notice have been uncomfortable, very little communication or only very sharp responses. I've also had my duties changed to carry out tasks I'm unfamiliar with and I guess I'm lacking in confidence/motivation to do these and it's making me feel anxious.

WIBU to go off sick for the remaining time of my notice period? I have 4 weeks left.

If you don't need her anymore for references then do it. Sounds like a terrible boss, lucky you're out of there soon

Yes, I would (and have) taken sick leave until my time was up when someone stressed me out this much. The way she’s treating you is unreasonable and unprofessional. Good to take time to yourself to get your head right for your new job. Congrats on your new job!

Thank you all for the replies, I have a HR reference as I didn't want to ask her to provide one.

I've never taken extended sick leave before, the last day I had off sick was around 3 years ago.

Can I ask the Dr to sign me off sick from the first day of absence? I'm absolutely dreading having to call in every day for the first week if I do it.

Given You didn’t once mention being stressed or unwell, yes YABU to ask to be signed off signed off. A difficult work environment doesn’t mean you are stressed to the point of needing sick leave.

Kevinspicey · 28/07/2024 08:44

@StormingNorman thank you for your perspective, I did mention in my post that I'm feeling anxious, marginalised and uncomfortable.

I'm not 100% sure what would be deemed reasonable hence the reason for my post here

No you fill in a self-certificate for the first 7 days and get a GP appointment during that week. When you phone in the first day just tell them you don't expect to be back that week and will be going to the GP.

TBH I noticed that but your post reads like someone in a difficult situation who wants to not work their notice because it’s easier. Not like someone who is stressed to the point of sickness. Some situations in life are difficult and it is normal and healthy to experience a stress response. Sick notes aren’t for any and every little upset.

Yes , I did for my notice period because it had got to the point I hated my job since a new company took over and I was not the only one .I had a new job lined up which I have since started and my gp actually offered to sign me off when i told them excatly how my old job was making me feel .

I would not call that a little upset , when you spend hours at a place that is making you feel way OP does I would not give them anymore of my time .Respect is a two way road , just because someone pays your wages it does not give them the right to treat you like shite .
