New job- four day week

Hi all,

There probably isn’t much I can do in this situation but as it’s the first job I’ve applied to in the last nine years I didn’t know if anyone had any words of wisdom.

I’ve applied for a job in another company in the same sector, very similar job just more money and a change of scene. I had a call to say I’ve got the role, hooray.

However, the company I work for is very flexible with working. So I said great, however, I would like to negotiate a four day working week, happy to work compressed hours or just at 80%. I currently work 60% and get a large amount of work done compared to colleagues who are here full time. The recruiter said that their director isn’t keen on this and wants someone in the role five days a week- not compressed hours.

My daughter is two, I’m sending her brother to school this year and I would still value a day a week with her at least. I cannot go to full time.

There is probably nothing I can do, I’m just not good at negotiating so I thought I would ask if anyone has had success in changing a mind for something like this.

I really hate being so torn between my career ambition and my kids!

Thanks in advance!
