How do I put it?

I have been offered a job conditional on references and my DBS check. I have listed my current employer who I have a check in meeting with tomorrow. How do I tell her I'm leaving, need a reference but without formally handing in my notice? Can't formally hand my notice in yet because the new place haven't provided the final formal offer yet!

It’s very commonplace, I’m in the same situation now. I just told my boss I had been offered a job and had accepted but I needed to provide references and security checks. Just ask for the best contact details to put down - whether your line manager or HR would be best.

Once you have a firm offer you can hand over your resignation letter or email.

I told my boss I’d been offered a job and they were wanting reference and the request would be sent in a few days, I didn’t say I had accepted it and didn’t hand my notice in then.

my boss came back with a counter offer but by then the new job had my reference and I had officially accepted the offer and had handed my notice in.

Thank you @DarkDarkNight and @2chocolateoranges yeah I suppose I just need to say it how it is. Only been there 5 months but new job is better money, more holidays, excellent pension and more interesting work. It's awkward that they will know I have been looking so soon after starting! Supppse I'm entitled to though

Sorry to jump on this but I am in exactly this situation. I want to let my current workplace know I have a conditional offer so it’s not a surprise when they are asked for references, and I’ve been there a long time.

The information above has reassured me.
