Leaving after maternity and career break

Hello,
I went on maternity in 2022 for my second baby. I then had a career break for a year which ends in October. I have been deemed unfit for work due to mental and physical factors and I'm crying everyday at the thought of returning to this place of work.
I had to sign a document before I went off on maternity to say I would have to pay back the maternity pay my employer contributed to me ( I didn't get statutory pay because I fell pregnant within my maternity leave eith first child) they paid me 4 months worth of wages at that time.
Since I had a career break after maternity does that technically cancel out that contact they made me sign about paying all the money back. I would pay it back if I had it but I'm scraping by as it is.
I'm due to go back 1st October and have to give 8 weeks notice of my return to work and it's causing me so much stress and anxiety. Please help

Do you have a copy of what you signed?

It depends on the wording basically.

How long did you have to work when you returned? Usually there's a time limit e.g. you have to return for 6 months after maternity or the pay is due back

Yes it says I have to work for 3 months or pay it pay but I've found out another employee who had a career break after maternity put their resignation in when they were due to return from career break (they also signed the same thing) and they weren't asked to pay their maternity back.
