Sick leave and giving notice

Mid June I applied for a new job, my mum passed away 2 weeks later and I went on compassionate leave for 6 days - I work 3 days a week. I got a doctor's note for 4 weeks today. The job I applied for have given me the job to start beginning of September. My current job requires 4 weeks notice. I'm not really sure what to do? I work for the NHS by the way. I also have annual leave booked mid August which was booked ages ago. Obviously I didn't know my Mum would pass away. Please advise

Firstly, if you’re on sick leave your annual leave will be cancelled. Can’t do both. Your HR will be able to advise how you move from sick leave to annual leave - if you move from one to the other they may need to do some paperwork. Let HR/your manager worry about that.

Secondly, I would give notice at an appropriate time to allow for 4 weeks, whether or not you’re still off sick. Depends on your relationship with your manager whether you tell them now and agree the September leaving date, or whether you just spring it on them in August.

And I’m really sorry to hear about the loss of your mum - please don’t worry about the work stuff, just get your manager to do their job. I would want to take that pressure off my staff.

@Newname2308 ok thank you. That's made things a lot clearer. I just wanted to ask about annual leave because after the my sick note ends that's when my annual leave starts as I need to take time off because my kids will be off

That's fine, sick period ends then leave starts.
