Talk to me about contract Vs permanent work?

Pros and cons?
I have been offered a role which could be either one. I'm not giving up a permanent job in order to take it (was made redundant a few months ago) so potentially a contract could be fine.
Is it normal to have the usual benefits as a contractor, or not, or does it vary? I'd want a salary adjustment upwards if not.

Probably relevant is that the redundancy payment was significant so I'm ok for that reason with a bit less job security.

Re: the contract option, I'm not an expert at all on IR35, but it's really important for you to know whether this contract is inside it (temporary employee) or outside it (freelancer) and the implications re: tax, employment status, business insurance, pension etc.
