Hi,
Just got my H's pension stmt, he dosnt beleive in pensions (i know 😓).. so he opted out, but the stmt shows that the employer is still contributing even though his contribution is £0. How is this possible?

I work part time and my employer matches my contribution but my H's stmt is confusing. I persume this is all his companies contribution and we wont get anything if he leaves the company as his contribution is £0.. am i right?

Anyone who know about this stuff can educate me, will be thankful 🙏

The employer has to contribute even if the employee opts out.

No they don’t.

But not all pension schemes require an employee contribution, it depends on the employer.

The employer does not have contribute if the employee has opted out in UK.

However, the employer may be making contributions as a benefit. You would need to look at his employment contract/benefits schedule to clarify.

Every pension scheme is different. That's one of the reasons they're so complicated.
Looks like the employer is still contributing even though your H has decided not to.
Possibly they would contribute more if he decided to contribute but that's a different question.

Assuming it's a defined contribution scheme then he will get the amount the employer has paid, plus the interest, when he retires.

I've worked a couple of places where they put in 5% regardless.

OP, what’s your husband’s retirement plan? Not contributing to a pension is worse than foolish and has implications for you as well as him. If I were in your position I would be having a very serious conversation very soon.

Has your H definitely opted out?

The reason I ask is my company takes my pension contribution as a salary sacrifice, therefore on my pension statement it shows 100% of the contribution from my employer and £0 from me. The monthly amount my employer contributes is made up of my 6% of salary sacrifice and their 6% contribution).
Is there anything on his payslip?

Plenty of employers contribute to a pension with no employee contributions. My employer pays 10% every month and I don’t contribute at all.
