Band Pay Negotiation

Hi all, I work in higher education.

Our pay point increases in annual increments up the pay band, stopping once you reach the top of the band.

does anyone have any experience with negotiating to ‘jump’ above to the next pay point within the grade, instead of the annual increment, essentially skipping a point. Eg negotiating to go from 32,332 to 33,966 at the annual rise, by skipping 32,982.

I’m not sure if negotiating this is even an option, so wanted to gauge an idea before actually asking. Thanks.

I used to work in HE. At my institution, line managers were able to recommend staff for an additional increment (ie above the standard incremental increase) on the basis of good performance, as part of the annual PDR process, but all recommendations were reviewed by a panel and most of them were turned down. (I used to sit on one of the review panels and we were not permitted to approve more than a small number, regardless of how good they were!) The ones that were successful had clearly gone way above and beyond what would usually have been expected in the role, and line managers had to put forward a convincing and well-evidenced case.
