Covering for maternity leave

i have been covering for my boss while they are on maternity leave and was told I would receive an uplift in salary for this. I have found out that I am being paid considerably less than the job was advertised at 5years ago. Is this allowed and do I have grounds to raise this

it’s cover assume at a higher level so will be classed as entry grade, at lease it’s something and not “for your development” like a lot spin!
