Payrises reduced because of mat leave?

Today I found out what my annual payrise is (3.5%). Speaking to a colleague (friend) who has received the same % but is now on a higher salary has raised questions in my head. A couple of years ago I was slightly ahead of him so he must have received a higher % over the last couple of years. The firm’s policy is based on ‘market data’ (and not performance related) so if you are paid over the market median, you will get a 3.5% payrise. We are the same job level so the market data being used will be the same. Colleague has suggested to me that I’ve received less over the last few years as I’ve had a couple of mat leaves.

I am annoyed and wondering if I should be challenging this payrise. I have had issues with maternity discrimination before - I was promoted just before telling the firm I was pregnant, they found out and gave me a tiny payrise. When I returned after mat leave I suddenly got a 30% increase. Any thoughts on whether I could/ should challenge the current payrise?

thanks!

You need to consult a lawyer who specialises in employment law. I doubt you can challenge the current pay rise and it sounds like you are out of time to challenge your earlier rises. However, as you have only just become aware of the issue, you may be able to raise this despite being out of time. Check to see if you have legal cover on your home insurance. If you do, they may be able to help.
