A dilemma about an interview/ job .....what would you do?

If there was a job you were really interested in but it involved an element of "public speaking", which is something you don't like doing, would you still consider the job?

I've had an informal interview but don't know whether to go for the next stage (formal interview)

Do you mean doing presentations, or press conference type things ?

Doing presentations well is really a learned skill, and with some training pretty easy. I'm quite shy, and find talking at a party or whatever really hard, but yet am now quite happy to stand up in front of 500 people and talk.

If the jobs really good otherwise, you can deal with this !

yes yes yes. what is job? of course you can do it even though it seems horrid. when you have job you will be confident in what you are saying. YOU WILL.

Yes, its doing presentations I suppose plus answering questions etc. I've led training courses before so have experience but hated every minute of it IYKWIM.

Its only a part-time job but has a lot of positives going for it. I'm entering back into work after a nearly 4 yr break and TBH I think my confidence work-wise is probably zero quite low

I'd definitely go for it if you are happy with all the other elements of the job, you'll get into it and good part time jobs are quite hard to find imo

oooh you're all making me think "Yes I'm going to go for it" whereas before I started the thread I was " No way, I'm not going to go for it...too stressful etc"

I'm confused.

cmotdibbler -you're from my neck of the woods aren't you? saw you on a thread (the meetup thread possibly??) and was trying to work out where you're from. Is it a small town beginning with a P (between W and E if thats not to cryptic)

Betty - please just go for it. Thinking about it is so much worse than actually doing it. I'd be really happy to give you some help with the presenting stuff if you're interested.

Do it. I do loads and the more you do the easier it is. In other words most people hate it to start with but if you do it all the time it's just like chatting to a friend.

Littlefish - you can stand up and sing in front of a crowd so it would be a doddle for you! I'll bend your ear at the meet-up if I decide to go for it

I know I can do it. But that doesn't stop me feeling unbelievably nervous before I do it. It's about managing those feelings and using the adrenaline (sp!) in a positive way.

Learning to control your breathing is important.

I also agree with Xenia that the more you do it, the easier it gets.

Also, I convinve myself that everyone is dying to hear what I've got to say, and are really friendly.

Betty - yes I do. We moved here in September. Are you close to here ?

Xenia is abs right about the more you do it, the easier it is. First time I had to do a big presentation, not only was there twice the number of people I expected, but I was also introduced as someone else. After that, its all been easier. Mind you, I get to talk about a subject I love. Much easier than doing training courses too, although I do those as well - but get much more wound up about them before as theres many more variables.

A colleague who was abs terrified of public speaking (actually had panic attacks)has had a lot of success with using NLP.

Re: the job. I'm afraid I wimped out and declined the offer to go forward to the formal interview. You all made me feel very positive last night (which was rather lovely of you all) but in the cold light of day today I decided it wasn't for me.

I'm hoping that that will mean there is a more suitable one round the corner waiting for me. If not, its not the end of the world if I have to wait a while.

If you ever see a scruffy looking woman wandering round Worcester on a Saturday with a large toddler in a Toddlerhawk, then thats probably me I do come over your way to go to the health food shop which sells great gf food on occasion too, but those are rather expensive shopping trips, so try not to make them too often
