I feel between a rock and a hard place at the moment. Previous manager was a woman with a young child, very understanding, but I now have a male workaholic manager (with children, mind, but the wife does everything child related).

Been at the company for quite a few years and planning to move before end of year to get in a catchment for a good school, so changing jobs just seems like too much on the plate but gosh does his attitude stress me out!

If you're planning to move jobs anyway, start looking now. A non understanding manager vs an understanding one can make all the difference to your sense of sanity when you have to (and want to!) be spending time outside work with your children, not catching up on all the xtra work they pile on you that you don't have time for.

And what happens when the kids are sick and you need time off to look after them? And then when they're better you get sick and also need time off. You'll end up working whilst sick just to assuage your unsupportive boss and your health and mental wellbeing can really take a turn.

Unless you have long service leave coming up soon, just move on as soon as possible and escape a toxic work situation. Life's too short.
