Hey, so i work for an American company which has an office in the UK that manages UK & Europe. I've worked here 4 years and have made big steps in my career here, however my manager is a few years off retirement and not so keen on change. I've out grown my role here, atleast whilst they're still here. A job was posted internally for a completely different department which i was interested in, the manager of said department asked me to apply. I did, had a few virtual meetings, both with them and the potential colleagues i'd work with. It was all going great, communication i'd had were positive and it was pretty much my job to lose. I didnt get the job and it was given to another colleague with very little explanation. Back to my colleagues, who are soon to retire and have made it very clear they want an easy life until then. I can't help but feel they had some influence on the decision due to how difficult it would be for them to replace me should i move department, given i would be next to step up the ladder when they move. I know this can't be proved and i'll have to take it on the chin but it has left a very sour taste in my mouth and not sure how to act/feel

Ask for a fuller explanation

Ask for information on what you need to get to the next step on the ladder.
