Am I unemployable!

Hello MN,

Help!

Self-Employed, Own Boss, ADHD, OCD ... worked in the 'media' industry and now need to find a new career/work as the part of the industry I am in is totally saturated and need to get out ... late 50s and now mobility issues!

I feel totally unemployable!

How can I find a new career/work to move forward?
I would be very happy to move in to the 'beauty' industry ...
Feeling very down about it all ... any suggestions welcome MN!
Confidence has been totally knocked with worry and constant rejections or just no response!

Are there any creative agencies for the 50+ market, if not we need one!

Onwards!

Sympathies, I'm in my 50s and I have just decided I have had enough of being self-employed after 15 years, work is so much harder to find people mess you around more, I think I'm experiencing ageism, I haven't really recovered from being excluded from financial support during Covid and I'm still paying back the bounceback loan, and I'm exhausted by it. I have just applied for a job in the old area that I used to work, I felt like all my experience was quite old when I was writing the supporting statement but I know that I could do the job. I don't know your sector, so no practical advice, but I wanted to say it's not just you!

Thank you @MurielThrockmorton ... it is just too depressing!

It is much harder if you have been your Own Boss for years for sure ...

If anyone in the creative recruitment industry or the beauty industry wants to give advice it would be greatly received ...

I am/was in the film industry, loved it, travelled and had a fabulous time but I know it cannot go on for much longer and I need to look further afield ... where to start!

Onwards!

There are often career changing in middle age threads on here, though I can't remember any specifically about the creative industries, may be worth starting a thread with that in the title. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has gone from running their own business back to employment in midlife, how much of a culture shock is it? I might start a thread on that!

I will check them out ... I wanted to add this to CAREER but could not find that topic only WORK!

MUMSNET HQ we need a CAREER and a CAREER CHANGE Topic/Thread added to the list!

I'm in same situation as you @WhatWouldYouDoLovelyPeople . Worked in the beauty industry (marketing) and, IMO, was 'aged' out. Realised when I went for a few roles that I eminently qualified for and nada so (unhelpfully for your post) I gave up applying. What area of the beauty industry are you interest in? Happy to DM with any intel if it helps. The only thing I'd say is that it is rampantly agist, fairly low-paid and tends to be headed up by men - again, all IMO. I 'transferred' my skills by helping a friend with a start up in a totally different area - not ideal but it meant I still had an income. I also know lots of other creatives from film/TV/beauty who've had to retrain as the senior roles are very slim pickings.

Thank you @Yetanothernamechange24.

I will reply to this later as I have to go out now for the rest of the day but THANK YOU for your feedback, really appreciated.

I would be interested in a few sides of the beauty industry : product, PR, campaigns, re training as a make up artist, facialist ...

I need to think about this obviously!

So very disappointing to hear that you were 'aged' out!

And I am most definitely up for a CAREER COACH too!

Where to start though MN!
