Nightmare Boss

Before I even begin, thanks for reading!

Im currently working my ‘notice period’ for the worst employer I’ve ever had!

It’s a small retail business with around 6 part time employees. None of us have ever had contracts (i gave them notice to be polite & avoid any issues as they’d just not pay me if I didn’t).
The boss can be aggressive & the mood swings are horrendous. You never know what you’re going to get, mood wise, from day to day.
There are no facilities for staff at work, with the exception of an outdoor toilet. There is no break room, nowhere to put personal belongings, there is no form of heating (fine at this time of year but the winter is harsh with us in scarves and gloves!) personal belongings and lunch are taken in your car (if you’re lucky enough to get a lunch!).

The boss sends angry WhatsApp messages to the ‘work chat’ about things we haven’t ’done properly’. They are always aimed at someone without the person being actually named, but you know who they mean. The boss says awful things about us all behind our backs but forgets that we do talk to each other.

Today we have all received another aggressive WhatsApp about our failings. The anxiety it causes me surrounding going back feels like it’s too much to cope with.

I don’t need a reference (got another job) & I’m supported at home if I don’t want to go back (which I don’t!) my question is,
how do I say it?! I’m happy to do it via WhatsApp, the same way they communicate with me.
I want to say that I can’t cope with the environment (or them!) but it will fall on deaf ears because they think they’re perfect and that we’re all lucky to work for them!

id love to say ‘shove it’ 😂

id really love some thoughts of how others would handle this.

Thank you 🙏🏻

I WOULD tell them to shove it, but I accept I’m hot headed!

You don’t need a reference, you don’t need to work notice for financial reasons, and you never want to return there? Yeah I’d be telling them exactly what I though and then blocking them. I can’t stand “managers” like that.

"As we are all so terrible, I'll take this opportunity to make thing's better. And I'll fuck off now and save you from my notice period.

If you want me to work my notice, please watch your tone, as I'm your employee, not your bitch "

Dear Steve

I’m writing to let you know that I will be leaving the business and my last working day will be June xx.

Kind regards

Susan

I had the most horrendous boss. You name it, he did it! Had sexual relationships with more than one member of staff, he was caught in the act on more than one occasion. He sexually harassed other members of staff who weren't interested in him.
He bullied people until they cried. He shouted and swore in peoples faces. He made people do menial jobs like spend 2 weeks solid sweeping the same floor over and over, just because he could. He would bitch about people, play them off against one another, have mood swings, grope people in full view of everyone else.
I left in the end. He is being investigated now after 2 years of complaints but I'm sure he'll get away with it.

10 years ago I’d have said this, I don’t know where my confidence has gone

How long is the notice period? If we are talking days/couple of weeks I would just go for 'Thats me away now. All the best, bye.' A passive aggressive approach.

Without a contract I doubt there is anything they could do.

DailyEnergyCrisis · 03/06/2024 18:53

“I find the working conditions and your communication style completely unacceptable so I won’t be coming back.” Wait until payday and send as soon as it hits your account.

I told them I’d work 4 weeks, because I could, but I have never seen a contract so I’ve no idea what it would say. I’ve worked 2 so far

If they are that awful, anything you say to them won’t even register - people like that are always right and everyone else wrong/idiots/insignificant.

In your situation, I would take great pleasure in being nice as pie to their face until I left but think of a way to mess with the systems or delete something crucial before I left in a way that could be seen as accidental, ideally something that would benefit the other poor souls who are left there, even if only to give them a laugh. Something that impacts on arsehole boss rather than the other workers though.

But then I’m vindictive like that.

LaurieFairyCake · 03/06/2024 19:01

As you've handed your notice in already I would respond to every message put by fuck badger in the WhatsApp group with:

"Gosh, I won't miss these comments when I move on"

EVERY FUCKING TIME

jackstini · 03/06/2024 19:15

Do you get paid weekly or monthly?

If weekly, you only need to give a week so I wouldn't be going back - unless it was to do or say something to make me feel better, boss feel worse or colleagues laugh gleefully!

If it's a week - I would put exactly what I think in the WhatsApp now. If monthly, I would do it on the day I left.

I have previously printed out an email a twunty boss wrote and gave a copy to all staff. Massively embarrassed him as showed everyone he was a lying git to us all

I also had sex on another bitchy boss's desk. Always wonder if he knew...
