Anyone made the change from public sector to financial services?

I'm specifically in data compliance, so something that's needed in all sectors but its application impacted by the context.

Currently earning £70k as a G6 in the civil service, I'm interested in some senior roles (same sector) in financial services companies, but the job spec usually has a desirable criteria of direct experience within financial services, which is obviously very different to a public sector environment. They welcome applications from all but haven't had any success yet.

I'm just wondering has anyone managed to make the plunge without taking a big downward step in order to build experience within financial services? I don't mind downgrading some responsibility but wouldn't be keen to cut my pay (take home at least, can compromise on pension if it leads to a more lucrative career in the long run!)

Do you work in London? Any jobs at the Bank of England as a halfway house?

I'm technically based in London yes (so long as hybrid is an option!) good shout I hadn't thought of that. I never seem to see any for HMT (which is known for being wildly competitive) but yes I will look at BoE too.

I made the change the other way. There are lots of good advantages to working in the private sector, but in the public sector I have an amazing pension and a much, much easier life, for the money.

I made the change but went via a stint at the FSA (it’s now the FCA & the PRA - which feels part of BoE).

Working in financial services was a doddle compared to the civil service but for way more money!
