Annoyed with interview feedback

The feedback I got for not progressing to the next stage was that I didn't have the depth of experience that they were looking for! However towards the end the interview one of the people that was interviewing actually said to me that he believed the role I was applying for would be a step down! So the feedback for not progressing is very contradictory. They said I came across well and answered the questions well but the last comment about not having the experience but telling me during the interview that essentially I was over experienced. So annoyed.

A job can be a step down and one that you’re not experienced in. You could be good at the planning and managing aspects of a role, but less good at the actual doing.

But this is one one the reasons I hate giving feedback on recruitment. It too often leads to upset or arguments.

So often the job has already gone to someone else, but they think it's equal ops to advertise it. Then they have to make up a reason why you didn't get it.

In some industries a step down job can be a different set of skills eg. lower roles could involve a lot more people-facing or technical skills than someone in a more managerial position.

But I agree with PPs, interview feedback is often made up!

You probably got a generic response. Don't beat yourself too hard for this.

Sunnyandsilly · 22/05/2024 11:24

But it can be both, you can be overqualified in some elements, but over all lack experience necessary compared to other candidates.

are you maybe just annoyed you didn’t get it?

StoneTheCrone · 22/05/2024 12:43

Sometimes, its a diplomatic response instead of 'your face doesn't fit.'

We've had to use reasons like this where we've had candidates who had BO or kept picking their nose - things you couldnt politely say.

bell1989 · 22/05/2024 13:21

@StoneTheCrone I can assure you I didn't pick my nose! The other feedback was that they thought I answered the questions well and came across well. I'm not annoyed I didn't get it and they obviously had a reason for not progressing me to the next stage. But I would appreciate a more adequate feedback response. The feedback response was half arsed in my opinion and didn't make any sense.

I suspect sometimes they give out some generic soundbites which will often fit and are only spotted when they don't! Or possibly mixing up candidate notes. I once went to an interview where I got turned down and the feedback was that I'd "barely said anything" in the interview. I had answered everything I'd been asked fully, volunteered more info and asked some questions. I did challenge it (internal role) but got nowhere. Annoying.
