Leaving a new job

I was previously in a job on a temporary contract. I knew it was temporary and my plan was to set up on my own once that role came to an end.
However, just as it was coming to an end, a friend said there was a similar vacancy where they were working and suggested I apply there. I did, and I was offered the position and took the role after my temporary position finished.
A few months in though, and I really don't like it. I have no control over what I do at all, am expected to work unsociable hours in order to work across different time zones, and well, the work feels totally meaningless and pointless. It's not what I was expecting at all.
I'm considering leaving and going back to my original plan of working for myself (IT contracting) I'm concerned though that this short job might reflect negatively though.
Any thoughts or suggestions? Should I stick it out a bit longer?

If you're contracting will many people be pouring over your CV like they would if you were applying for a job?

You can post your current job as a temporary role (which it is) and your reason for leaving would be to start your consulting.

How long is the contract you're in and how long of that is left?

I'm not contracting at the moment. I was planning to but this permanent position came up that seemed initially like it would be a good fit for me.
I was in the previous position for just under two years and the role before that for nearly 20 years.

I don’t think this would look particularly negative, considering the 20 years at a previous employer. Also, as you would go in to contracting I don’t think it matters so much.

I’ve recently seen a few CVs where the person took a new role and it obviously wasn’t a good fit so they left. I haven’t seen this affect people negatively, just have your story sorted as to why (took temporary role whilst I established my consultancy company).

Could you carry on in the current role for a few months whilst you sort out your next steps?

Thank you, I feel reassured by this.
I think I will take a bit of time in this role while I get myself fully ready to make the change. I was geared up for it before but then veered off. Knowing there's a plan and it's not too far off will certainly help me to keep with it for the immediate future.
